Build English Environment in Campus Through Various English Club and Competitions

In the context of D4-ITM curriculum development, Polimanado has implemented a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) on January 28-29, 2021 and received inputs from tourism industry and alumni and also gained insights into their needs. 40 participants consisting of 23 male participants and 17 female participants has attended this FGD. The participants represented tourism industry, including hotel associations, tour and travel agents, diving center, cruiseline, and MICE. In addition, the FGD also was attended by government offices related to the tourism industry, namely the Province Tourism Office, the Manpower Office, The Archeology Office, and The Immigration Office. Some of participants are the alumni who are already working in tourism industry. Previously, a tracer study activity had also been carried out to collect information from 120 alumni of Tourism Department Polimanado as material to complete the initial preparation of the D4-ITM curriculum. Through the initial FGD and tracer study that have been carried out, it was concluded that English language competence is a major requirement in ITM study program learning process. As initial preparation, British Council has conducted the English Score assessment for students and APTIS test for teachers.

One of the objectives of the establishment of ITM Study Program is to build English environment in Campus. In accordance to this objective, under the coordination of PIC of Activity 3 S4P-ILO-Polimanado PMU, an activity in order to build English environment through various English Competitions was carried out. The Competitions that was held consisted of two, namely the Storytelling Competition on the 1st day and Speech Competition on the 2nd day.

Judicators were taken from students representative as English Club members. The composition of judicators was as follows:

  • Gabriella Ezra Putri Prasetyo
  • Aretha Bening Topayung

On the 1st day, 40 students consisted of 25 female students and 15 male students attended the English Storytelling competition event. Eleven of them were the contestants, five were the judicators, the rest were the audience.

On the 2nd day, 40 students consisted of 22 female students and 18 male students attended the English Speech competition event. Eight of them were the contestants, five were the judicators, the rest were the audience.

The winner of the English Storytelling Competition were:

  • Christin Mado from Accounting Department
  • Gloria Tigau from Tourism Department
  • Monica Mangusuhe from Accounting Department

The Winner of the English Speech Competition were:

  • Abigail Rattu from Tourism Department
  • Efraim Lumingkewas from Electrical Engineering Department
  • Angie Lae from Civil Engineering Department
